High Altitude Botanical Garden

High Altitude Botanical Garden in Tilcara

The High Altitude Botanical Garden is a botanical garden located next to the Pucará de Tilcara, situated at over 2,500 meters above sea level. It was conceived with a focus on conservation, research, and education about local biodiversity. Inaugurated in 1970 as part of an agreement between the University of Buenos Aires and the province of Jujuy, it covers approximately 3 hectares on land within the Huasamayo River basin.

Along the trail, visitors can observe high-altitude plant species from the Quebrada and the Puna, including cacti, xerophytic shrubs, medicinal plants, succulents, and other species adapted to the region's arid and cold climate. The plants are displayed with signs and information panels that help identify the species, offering an educational and visual experience for visitors.

Although many travelers visit it in combination with a visit to the Pucará —since it is accessed with the same entrance—, the High Altitude Botanical Garden is an independent and enriching outing for those who wish to learn about the unique plant diversity of the Andes and the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

What to expect from the visit: unique high-altitude species; informative signage; peaceful walking routes; and a tour that can be combined with the Pucará and the museum.

Hours: approximately 09:00 to 17:15 every day.
